From high-performance supercars to muscle and electric cars as well as trucks, the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) has something for everyone. Now in its 29th year, it has come to be known as the event that shapes the future automotive landscape – up close and in one place.

NAIAS is held in Detroit, USA and kicks off each calendar year with the latest trends, technologies and ideas that matter the most in the automobile world. This year it took place from 8 – 22 January 2017.  It is a global platform for automobile companies to showcase and debut their most defining, innovative and industry-shaping vehicles.

Last year, NAIAS featured 61 vehicle introductions, most of which were new introductions to the market. It is the place to be to show off a new vehicle globally as there are over 5 000 journalists from 60 different countries.

NAIAS is comprised of six unique shows: The Gallery (an ultra-luxury automotive event), AutoMobili-D (an inside look at future mobility platforms), Press Preview, Industry Preview, Charity Preview and all concluding with a nine-day Public Show.

This year BMW took the opportunity to stage the world premiere of the all new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the US premiere of the BMW Concept X2. Also part of the line-up included the new BMW 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid, the sporty BMW M550i xDrive, and the luxurious BMW 6 Series model range.


The all new BMW 5 Series, the world’s most successful business sedan which is now in its seventh generation, features enhanced dynamics, supreme assistance systems with an unmatched level of connectivity, a new operating system and overall sleek aesthetics that gives you that elated feeling.

Ludwig Willisch, President and DEO of BMW North America said at the world debut: “The BMW 5 Series has always remained core to our brand. And since 1975 it was a car that further established BMW as “The Ultimate Driving Machine” in the US.  Today, we are proud that America remains the single largest market for the BMW 5 Series in the world!  And for 10 of the last 12 years, the BMW 5 Series Sedan has led over its most direct competitors in the US!

“The success of the BMW 5 Series in America is just one example of the strong bond the BMW Group has with this country. And over the last four decades, the United States has truly become our second home!  This country has influenced our global thinking in terms of production, technology, design, and our vision of future mobility,” added Ludwig Willisch.
